how antivirus software works

An Antivirus is a vital component of any computers software. Without it, our computers are a risk of being infected by one of thousands of viruses on the web. But, how exactly does the antivirus software work?

1. Comparing Files to Virus Database
When opening a program or a file on your computer, it wont simply pop up and start working. Your operating system starts a series of processes that will trigger the program or file. Among those processes is the antivirus check. The antivirus checks that program or file and compares its coding to a database of files that are considered viruses. If the file or program that will be executed is similar to a virus, the antivirus will prevent it from starting and will automatically quarantine the file or program to avoid damage to the computer. This is the most popular and practical way for detecting viruses. Given the nature of this process, it is vital that the virus database is always up to date, to keep track of every new virus produced.

2. Recognizing Erroneous Patterns
Detecting malicious behaviors or actions on a program or file is much more complicated than just comparing to an existing database. When comparing virus behavior, the antivirus has to trigger the program in order to see if executes anomalies or harmful files. If it doesn’t, then the program performs normally, but if it performs in a manner that it is not supposed to, the antivirus will contain it. Typical viral behaviors include: opening the same program several times, closing the program as soon as you open it, executing other programs that you did not intend to. The most malicious ones will send sensitive information, such as passwords, pin numbers, and bank account numbers to hackers. Other programs simply make your computer collapse by executing programs that harm your Hard Drive, Motherboard, Processor and/or your RAM.

Remember to regularly scan your computer for any malicious threat, this way your antivirus might detect a dormant threat on your device.
