Honestly I have comments off on my blogs except for 2, they just attract spam bots.

Although in some cases nofollow links can still be beneficial, I wouldn't waste time getting comment links, unless it's for direct clicks on active blogs with real people. There are so many better ways to do link building with that time.

Can you expand on the "There are so many better ways to do link building with that time."

Yeah, for the time spent doing comment spamming (Unless it's just a bot, but I still don't recommend that anymore), you could be trading/creating better links that add value and that are contextual, to be basic about it. To answer the nofollow/dofollow question in the OP, comments are almost always nofollow.

There are good comments from people on some sites discussing real issues. When it comes to adult blogs the story is not the same.

Besides the click-throughs and brand awareness (We don't care about that as much in non-mainstream, though), SEs know about nofollow and don't exactly follow the rules. There are many studies showing that nofollow can still help with ranking better in SEs. I'd still avoid comment spam, though.

"I wouldn't waste time getting comment links, unless it's for direct clicks on active blogs with real people." 100% spot on answer.
